Focus on how much better your life will be as a non-smoker. Think about how you'll be able to breathe better and your energy level will increase. Imagine all the things you can do with the moneyyou'll save each year by not purchasing cigarettes. And most importantly, focus on how you'll add many; many healthy years to your life, so you can do all the things you've wanted to do, spending time with people you care about. Make a long list of all the positive benefits of being a non-smoker!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;3. Make it easier on yourself. Think of ways that you can make quitting easier for yourself. Can you quit with a friend or family member? Could you ask a co-worker to go for a quick walk with you on breaks and avoid the smoking area? Could you take a smoking cessation class? Give yourself rewards. Why not have a quit jar and put all the money that you would have spent on cigarettes in it? You could save up for a tropical vacation or a down payment on that new sports car. Mark them on your calendar so you have something to look forward to.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;8. Approach quitting with a "I can. I will. I must." attitude. If your child or loved one was burning in a building and you were the only one there to get them out, would you just "give it a try?" Would you simply "give it a shot?" Or would you "give it everything you've got?" Of course you would do anything and everything, whatever it took. Well, aren't you worth the same? So approach quitting smoking with the same attitude, because you're truly saving your own life - you're worth it!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; 9. Visualize your way to success. Every morning and evening, close your eyes for a few moments and rehearse in your mind how you will say "no" to any temptations to having a cigarette, and notice how good it feels to be in control of your triggers and urges. Also, picture and imagine yourself as a happy non-smoker for 3 to 5 minutes each day. See yourself as happy, healthy and active doing all the things you love to do.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;10. Learn to Manage Stress. Stress is everywhere, and while we think that cigarettes help us to relax, in reality, nicotine is a stimulant to the body. During the first few days of quitting, you will likely have thoughts to have a cigarette when you feel stressed. Learning to take long, deep breaths throughout the day can be a good start. DiMaggio&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Stress! Everyone can relate to that overwhelming feeling. It creeps up on you at work, at home, sometimes even on your vacation. How can one impact this? How can one end the vicious cycle of stress?As a Senior Program Leader for Landmark Education, an international training and development company, I lead courses for hundreds of people on a monthly basis. The people that attend our programs are there to create breakthrough results in the areas of their life that matter most, including career, relationships, and productivity. Each person brings his or her own set of life experiences to the course.&lt;br /&gt;However, one commonality that I often find among participants is that they feel STRESSED. They are stressed about their jobs, their kids, responsibilities, schedules, and on and on. Many participants, including extremely successful individuals, communicate that they sometimes feeling overwhelmed by what they have to deal with in their day-to-day lives, and they don’t know what to do about it.&lt;br /&gt;In today’s world, it is clear that stress can have an enormous negative impact on people. It ultimately robs us of our ability to operate at our maximum potential and to enjoy life fully. When coaching participants about stress in Landmark Education’s courses, I often share the following ways to begin to interrupt the natural progression of stress:Give yourself room. It is helpful to remember that it is completely natural to experience stress from time to time. When this happens, allow yourself time and space to experience just how you are being impacted. A natural response to serious events, or numerous events that require your attention at the same time, is to sometimes become numb or distracted.&lt;br /&gt;This takes away our ability to experience for ourselves what is actually happening. Reacting is natural. Be clear that there is nothing wrong in being affected by the events of the day. It’s natural to have reactions. At the same time, you do not need to be limited by them. People need to create a distinction between what stress is and what causes it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Stress is not based upon outside sources but rather how we perceive a circumstance and then react to it. Observe your reaction. The key here is to react appropriately to “what’s really happening” rather than “overreacting.” How does one know if he or she is overreacting? You can begin by making a distinction between “what’s actually happening” versus “what you think about what’s happening.” Here’s an example: You are busy at your job working hard to make a deadline.&lt;br /&gt;Then, unexpectedly, your wife calls to tell you that one of your sons was stung by a bee and has to go the doctor and she needs someone to watch your other children. Your first reaction is to overreact: “It is always something, I can’t catch a break, my wife should have been watching the kids more closely, I am going to miss my deadline and my boss will be furious, etc.” Your stress and frustration begin to mount. This is when you must consciously decide to distinguish between a) what happened and b) what you are thinking about what happened. In that moment, you will see that all that is happening is that your son has a bee sting and needs to be treated and you need to find someone to watch your children.&lt;br /&gt;You will see that everything else is just part of your reaction. As your stress subsides, you will remember your neighbor and best friend is on home on vacation. You will call him and ask him to watch your children and he will accept. The crisis will be handled and your stress will disappear. When you recognize that you are simply reacting -- perhaps even overreacting -- you will expand your view and ultimately find additional power in the face of stress.&lt;br /&gt; Another thing that I have noticed is that most people experience stress when they are feeling like something is out of their control. There are many demands and expectations that are placed on each of us, from others and from ourselves, and we often fall into the trap of mistaking these expectations as the way things should or must go.&lt;br /&gt;To deal with stress that results when our expectations go unfulfilled, we invite participants in our Landmark Education courses to try letting themselves be 100% present to a situation to watch the events unfold rather than trying to force those events to conform exactly to their expectations. For example, even if we know better, we expect people to do exactly what they say they will do by the time at which they say they will do it. Therefore, when people fall short of doing what they said, our unfulfilled expectations leave us upset and stressed. We may even blame them for our feeling so upset.&lt;br /&gt;This over reaction then leaves us stuck in the middle of how things should have gone vs.how things went. This robs us of the power to deal with what needs to be accomplished with the available resources at hand.You have a say. While there are events in life that we cannot alter, one thing that always remains in our control is who we are going to be in the face of those events. Where are you standing regarding the events that are taking place?&lt;br /&gt; Focus your attention on what you are committed to -for yourself and others- and take action based on that. By doing this, you will experience more freedom and clarity, and your actions will make more of a difference.Ultimately, when people experience stress, they are simply reacting to life not working out the way they want or expect. Becoming aware of what is really happening -- separating what happened from our story or interpretation about what is happening -- allows us to discover that much of what we considered already determined, given or fixed, may in fact not be.&lt;br /&gt;Situations that may have been challenging or stressful can become more fluid and open to change. We find ourselves no longer limited by a finite set of options, but able to stand committed, not stuck. In the workplace, the negative, damaging, effects of stress can arise at times when pressures are extreme, such as peak busy periods, but equally can be caused by continuous exposure to stressful conditions, such as being in an unsuitable job or being treated unfairly.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Outside work, negative stress can be caused by major change events, such as a death in the family, but equally by continuous pressure of having a life constrained or dominated by the work situation.Stress is personal in that stress affects individuals in different ways. In similar situations or conditions some people cope, even thrive, on the pressure, whilst others find it difficult to cope and suffer negative stress as a result. It is also personal in the sense that the amount of control that the individual has, over their workplace conditions, events, and work-life balance, will influence the amount of negative stress that they suffer from.&lt;br /&gt;Those individuals with greater control will tolerate and manage stress levels, or avoid them altogether, more successfully.Work-life balance is, literally, balancing the demands, the amount of time and effort, given to work and the workplace, and that given to the individual’s domestic, personal, family, and social life. A vital factor in achieving an appropriate work-life balance is ensuring that the work element does not dominate, and-or that it is not causing damage to the individual through the effects of negative stress.&lt;br /&gt;It is most unusual to find people with a work-life balance that is dominated negatively by their life outside the workplace. It is almost always the workplace activity that dominates and often negatively. For professionals undertaking personal and career development activities, the positive activity of personal development must be actively managed in order to ensure that it does not have a negative effect on stress levels and cause damage to the individual’s work-life balance.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The increased awareness of the importance of managing stress and work-life balance effectively has given rise to approaches such as time management, managing stress, achieving work-life balance, managing personal development, and related approaches such as coaching and mentoring. The tools and techniques within these approaches are valuable in helping individuals to manage stress and work-life balance more successfully.&lt;br /&gt;All of these are worth exploring in more depth. However, here we will focus on simple, well established actions that any individual can take themselves.There are some well established, simple to implement, approaches that will help to reduce the effects of negative stress and help to maintain an appropriate work-life balance. These include: Recognising the symptoms that will alert you to the fact that you may be under stress.&lt;br /&gt; Commonly experienced symptoms are:&lt;br /&gt;Poor health - headaches, upset stomach, sleep problems, change in appetite, tense muscles, indigestion, exhaustion, stomach, intestinal and skin problems, and heart attacks (extreme but not uncommon in severe cases);&lt;br /&gt;Personal behaviour - constantly worrying, irritated, feeling depressed, unable to cope and make decisions, being less creative, excessive smoking, excessive use of alcohol, not sleeping; Unsatisfactory work situation - low job satisfaction, poor relationships with colleagues, focusing on unproductive tasks, deadlines missed, performance level falling, opportunities missed, poor appraisal outcomes, feeling de-motivated;&lt;br /&gt;Personal life:stopping social activities, being irritated and argumentative with family and friends, personal relationships deteriorating.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Many of these symptoms can be experienced in normal life, but become symptoms of stress when several are experienced at the same time, or when there is no obvious cause, or when one or more symptom becomes overwhelming. We need to remember, however, that whilst the symptoms often are more visible, and potentially damaging, in the workplace, they are not necessarily caused by workplace pressures.&lt;br /&gt; Many are, but not all and not always.Identifying the sources in the workplace: As individuals working in a business world that is continuously changing at an ever-increasing pace, we need to be adaptable and flexible.&lt;br /&gt;In order to avoid negative stress we need to be aware of, prepared for, and able to manage, the impact of:&lt;br /&gt;time pressures;&lt;br /&gt;demanding deadlines;&lt;br /&gt;increasing complex relationships with others;&lt;br /&gt;peaks and troughs of too much or too little work;&lt;br /&gt;multiple, overlapping business or work changes;&lt;br /&gt; threats of redundancy or unwanted job change;&lt;br /&gt; pressure from senior managers; unfair or discriminatory actions of management;&lt;br /&gt;travel pressures;&lt;br /&gt;increases in performance expectations;&lt;br /&gt;more visible scrutiny through technology and surveillance;&lt;br /&gt;requirements to undertake continuous personal professional development activities.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Identifying the sources in life outside work:&lt;br /&gt;Outside the workplace there are regularly occurring events and pressures that are a normal part of our lives, but which can be either a source of stress, or satisfaction, or both.&lt;br /&gt;These include:&lt;br /&gt;death of friend or family member;&lt;br /&gt;a relationship breakdown leading to separation or divorce;&lt;br /&gt; personal or family member injury;&lt;br /&gt;moving house;&lt;br /&gt;taking on large financial commitments such as for a mortgage;&lt;br /&gt;holiday periods where personal relationships are refreshed and renewed, or put under intense pressure;&lt;br /&gt;giving up a habit such as smoking;&lt;br /&gt;the birth of a child;&lt;br /&gt;getting married; and so on.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Knowing what your natural response will be:&lt;br /&gt;Individuals adapt and adjust to external pressures in different ways, depending on their personality type. The range of types is very wide, but two broad bands of personality type have been identified.&lt;br /&gt;Type "A" people are described as competitive, aggressive or hasty, whilst Type "B" people behave in a passive, non-competitive, slow to react way.&lt;br /&gt;Type "A" people tend to pass on stress to others, Type "B" tend to internalise the effects of stress.&lt;br /&gt;Whilst these are established, proven categories that most people fall into, other factors, such as age, gender, health, financial situation and access to support will strongly influence the response to causes of stress, regardless of personality traits.&lt;br /&gt; Knowing your personality type can be helpful, but can only play a small part in managing stress successfully.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Identifying strategies and actions that will help you to cope:&lt;br /&gt;As we have seen, individuals react differently to stress, so each of us will need to adopt different coping strategies.&lt;br /&gt;The following are well established, proven actions and strategies for managing stress and achieving work-life balance:&lt;br /&gt; be aware of your own weakness and strengths;&lt;br /&gt;understanding and accepting that certain things cannot be avoided or changed;&lt;br /&gt; taking action to reduce or remove the pressure;&lt;br /&gt;breaking down problems into smaller parts and setting targets to tackle each part in sequence; implementing personal time management techniques;&lt;br /&gt;replacing negative relationships with positive, supportive relationships;&lt;br /&gt;adopting a healthy living style;&lt;br /&gt;develop outside work interests, such as hobby, educational, social or sporting activity; undertaking positive professional career development activity;&lt;br /&gt;seeking advice and support from others, including professionals if appropriate;&lt;br /&gt;accepting that managing stress and work-life balance is a permanent continuous activity.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Corporate support mechanisms:&lt;br /&gt;Some organisations have recognised that stress and work-life balance are issues that need to be supported by corporate action. Individuals in these organisations should, where appropriate, take advantage of support mechanisms such as:&lt;br /&gt;Flexible working hours: allowing employees to organise working hours to accommodate important aspects of their home lives;&lt;br /&gt;Self managed teams:where teams work out their own hours, responding to each others’ needs; Using a buddy system:pairing with a colleague to provide cover for each other, enabling each to take time off when necessary, knowing that their buddy will take over their duties and responsibilities;&lt;br /&gt;Flexible locations:working from different locations, or from home, either regularly or occasionally, to help with family responsibilities and reduce or eliminate commuting time; Special leave availability: such as paid or unpaid leave, to give time to cope with personal crises and emergencies, without using formal holiday allowance;&lt;br /&gt;Career breaks:for study or research sabbaticals, travel, family commitments, or voluntary work; Health programmes - offer counselling and advice, for a range of issues;&lt;br /&gt;Private health insurance;&lt;br /&gt;Fitness programmes and gymnasium membership subsidies;&lt;br /&gt;Childcare/eldercare facilities or subsidies:workplace nursery or subsidised places in local nurseries or nursing homes.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; All of these are highly valuable support opportunities, which, if available, should be taken when needed.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;For most managers and specialists, in all sectors of business today it is an essential requirement, that professionals undertake courses in management development, or in specialist disciplines such as quality management, project management, accountancy, human resources, or marketing.&lt;br /&gt;The objective of this activity, from the individual’s point of view, is usually to obtain higher financial rewards, higher status, increased job security, and-or to increased opportunities and career choice. From the organisation’s point of view it is rightly aimed at improving the knowledge, understanding, skills, and ultimately the performance of the individual and the workforce collectively.&lt;br /&gt;The impact on the individual, regardless of these contrasting objectives, is that work-life balance is affected, pressure will rise and will need to be managed to avoid this resulting in negative stress. The way your body processes the carbohydrates you eat have more to do with your waistline than the amount of fat or calories that you consume. In his book, Atkins outlines a phenomenon called “insulin resistance.” He theorizes that many overweight people have cells that do not work correctly.&lt;br /&gt; When you eat excess carbohydrates and sugar, your body notices that sugar levels are elevated. Insulin is released from the pancreas in order to store sugar as glycogen in the liver and muscle cells for extra energy later on. However, your body can only store so much glycogen at once. Compellis Pharmaceuticals is developing the drug, which has only been tested on mice so far, says Compellis CEO Chris Adams.&lt;br /&gt;The company plans to begin human testing this year.&lt;br /&gt;Orlistat (Xenical and alli) - A lipase inhibitor, Orlistat promotes weight loss by preventing the digestion and absorption of some fat from food. Unabsorbed fat is then excreted via the stool. It's available by prescription as Xenical and, since June, as alli, the only FDA-approved over-the-counter weight loss product. Orlistat side effects may include gas with oily spotting and an urgent need to have a bowel movementCLA - A new meta-analysis by University of Wisconsin at Madison researchers has shown that supplements containing conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), on the market for years, may help people shed fat. It's believed that CLA, a fatty acid found in foods of animal origin such as beef, modifies enzymes responsible for storing and burning fat. Supplements are a good vehicle for CLA because it would be difficult for people to get enough of the fatty acid without loading up on saturated fat.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;PP - Researchers at the Imperial College, London, are looking at how gut hormones--pancreatic polypeptide (PP) in particular--affect appetite control. The hormones are released when a person eats, acting as neurotransmitters that tell the brain to stop eating. Though it's being developed in the form of an injection, it's possible in the future that it could be produced as a patch or gum. But administration of the receptor Y2R into the mice's abdominal fat prevented both results, melting the fat.&lt;br /&gt;Researchers hope that blocking Y2R might work the same way in humans.Rimonabant (Acomplia) - Approved for use in the European Union as an obesity treatment, rimonabant selectively blocks the CB1 receptors of the endocannabinoid system. This system of receptors in the brain and body helps regulate food intake and how the body uses and stores fats and sugars. In clinical trials, rimonabant has been shown to reduce body weight, with side effects such as nausea and anxiety. Sanofi-aventis withdrew its FDA new drug application for rimonabant last month but is working toward resubmitting.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Suppressing Rip140 - Research has shown that suppression of receptor-interacting protein 140 (Rip140), a nuclear hormone co-repressor that regulates fat accumulation, can accelerate fat burning in animals and fat cells. Initially the subject of experiments at Imperial College in London, RXi Pharmaceuticals is developing the approach as a potential obesity or type-2 diabetes treatment.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Cetilistat - Under development by Alizyme, Cetilistat is a gastrointestinal lipase inhibitor that blocks fat digestion and absorption, causing weight loss. Clinical trials have shown that the drug has fewer side effects than Xenical, according to Alizyme. Cetilistat is currently being prepared for phase-three clinical development.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Meridia - An oral prescription medication, Meridia works by affecting the appetite control center in the brain. Most people who lose weight on the drug, in combination with diet and exercise, do so in the first six months of treatment, according to its maker, Abbott Laboratories.
